mini biography

from memoir by Duane E. McIntosh:

Alexander is one to whom we are all indebted, he took the time and energyto write "MEMORANDA of the McINTOSH FAMILY" in 1933. He wrote this sketchwhile visiting his daughter Edith McIntosh Coburn, in Pawtucket R.I.

Alexander, with great difficulty, due to the destruction of the public institutionsduring the War Between the States, obtained sufficient education to teach school. He taught for about 10 years, until shortly after he was married and needed a largerincome. He then turned to more manual labours, working for various railroad companies. His first school was at Poplar ridge in Moore County, he also taught at several othersin the county, teaching until about 1884.

Alexander and Elizabeth Eugene Hancock were married 1 January 1878. Elizabeth was thedaughter of John and Nancy (Short) Hancock, the nearest neighbors to his parents home. Her grandfather was also John Hancock and her family was said to be related to thefamily of revolutionary war fame.

Alexander and Elizabeth were married for 53 years and had 12 children, 9 of which they raisedto adulthood. THey spent the last 31 years of their lives together at their home inRoberdell. Alex was still living there in 1936, when visited by several of my familymembers.
